There is a traditional custom in Guangzhou which is practiced during the Mid-Autumn Festival. That is to make lanterns with bamboo strips.

广州在中秋节有一个传统风俗，就是用竹条扎灯笼。

People will make lanterns painted with various colors and hang it on rooftops, so that they can compete with the bright moon. 

人们会将制作好的灯笼绘上各种颜色挂在瓦檐或天台之上，明亮的能与明月争辉。

Nowadays, bamboo lanterns are harder to find. Fortunately, there was a carpenter in Guangzhou whomadelanterns by hand every day despite being over seventy years old. 

如今，竹扎灯笼越来越难觅。但广州有位手工扎作灯笼的匠人，年过七旬仍坚持每天扎作灯笼。
