Recently, "Springer Nature" released the latest "Nature Index Science Cities" supplement. It shows that six Chinese cities now place within the global top 10, accounting for over half of the top 10 spots for the first time. Guangzhou rose two places to secure the sixth position globally.

The rankings show that Beijing has maintained the top position since 2016, while Shanghai holds second place. Nanjing, Guangzhou, Wuhan, and Hangzhou rank fifth, sixth, eighth, and tenth, respectively. Shenzhen is positioned at 18th place.

Earlier, "Nature" published "The leading cities in the world for high-quality research in 2024," which also featured five subsidiary rankings: Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, Chemistry, Earth and Environmental Sciences, and Health Sciences. Guangzhou ranked among the global top ten across all these subjects, ranking sixth in Physical Sciences, ninth in Life Sciences, fourth in Chemistry, third in Earth and Environmental Sciences, and tenth in Health Sciences.

The Nature Index is compiled by Nature Research Intelligence, part of Springer Nature. It is a publicly available database of author affiliations and institutional relationships, measuring contributions to research articles published in 145 high-quality natural-science and health-science journals.
